Female Health
“Menstrual blood is the only type of blood that is not traumatically induced. Yet, in modern society, this is the most hidden blood, the one so rarely spoken of and almost never seen, except privately by women…”- Judy Grahn
Female health begins with acknowledgement, understanding, appreciation and working with your menstrual cycle.
The goal is to embrace your menstrual cycle for the amazing “secret women’s business” it does to maintain so many essential processes and systems in your body.
But, somewhere in history, in some societies, it became a symbol of shame and inconvenience. Many moons ago, I grew up in such a high school environment where ‘the red flow’ was a period of ‘woe is me’. Why wouldn’t it be, when ill-fitting pads, and lack of period trackers left one to the ambushes of a visible red leakage on the back of a royal blue school skirt and mental scars of sniggering school girls. Back then, we wore school blazers and girls would often cut the inner pocket lining to create secret, ninja compartments to hide their mighty thick pads. Tampons were around but they had two drawbacks. They were invasive and had the potential complication of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a highly feared and poorly understood consequence of their use.
